Quick question, can I copy the dhcp lease file from one installation to another?
I want to keep the leased addresses the same.

Thanks.

Martin,

Would it be better to use host constructs in /etc/dhcpd.conf?

In that case leases will never change. You have a well documented list
of the leases you provide.

It is harder on the sysadmin of the dhcp-server, he/she has to edit the
dhcpd configuration every time a new client enters the network.

The alternative I use is dynamic dns, so if a lease might change I can
still find the client by it's hostname.

Kind regards,

Hi Jan,

well I'm migrating over to a new server, and we have been using dhcp.
The leases never expire so everyone has the same IP they start out with.
No host constructs.
Now, I have a konica/minolta printer/scanner that is setup with host
addresses for scanning.
So keeping the same lease file would save me some configuration time.
We are only running WINS on samba and DNS is handled by the ISP. Finding
XP clients by name works fine.

Thanks

Hi Martin,

You could try to copy /var/lib/dhcpd/dhcpd.leases
to the new server and restart the dhcpd daemon.

Jan,

Well it didn’t work out as planned. Seems the functionality of dhcpd has
changed.
even tho the uid/MAC is the same, new leases were created.
I wound up using the host construct in dhcpd.conf to keep the same IP
addresses.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Martin,

Your welcome.

It is annoying to see that some functionality disappears over the years.
