RedHat 8.0 and USB drives in VMWare

Hello there,
For legacy reasons I have to use Redhat 8.0, which I'm running from XP
in VMWare. So far everything's ok and though the Redhat install can
access the internet I can't transfer files to and from the host machine.

I've given up trying to get the two to network, so now I'm just trying
to mount a USB stick. In other OS installs this 'just works' but the
VMWare USB stick does not appear to be detected, I just get
'unknown device 15ad:0770' with driver ehci-hcd

There's precious little USB information in dmesg, and mounting /dev/sda1
gets me part of the OS, not the USB drive.

Has anyone got any ideas on what I could do next?

No ideas about the USB issue, but there might be a way around the file
transfer problem. Can you create a partition that's formatted VFAT?
If not, you may be able to install an extra disk formatted this way.
(Unless your transfer needs include huge files, an old, small [by
today's standards] drive will be fine.) XP will see it as a D: drive
and you can edit fstab to mount it at boot. Just be sure to add
umask=000 to the line, or you'll have read only access for some weird
reason. HTH, HAND.

Not easily, as I'm not sure about what machine I'll be working on (as in
the host). It'll certainly be a laptop.
